The drive to procreate

11 Aug

Tick tock. Tick. Tock. Can you hear that? It’s the proverbial biological clock ticking away. Telling me I need to procreate. To have babies.

Or not. Some days it’s hard to tell. I vacillate between wanting to be a mother to being completely repulsed by the idea. This is not a crisis unique to me.

Most of the women I know have had this same dilemma and dealt with in a variety of ways. Some women decide that after a lot of thought and more thought and still some more thought that perhaps all that thinking means that they don’t actually want kiddos.

And then there are the girls who never even made it out of high school before they were mothers.

Both groups aforementioned ladies are friends. Both groups seem to have certain things about this procreation thing work out.

So my big question, is not knowing for sure by the time you’re 30, the answer. And is that answer : no?

It seems that maybe it is the answer. Or maybe I’m in some level of denial and all my excuses of how it doesn’t make sense financially, and how I want to be married for a couple years first, and how I want to travel more first, etc.-how all that stuff actually equates to something very basic. It’s not a priority.

Those of you with the kiddos, how did you know? Those of you without, what’s your deal?

Damn, I had a BIG reply to this cuz I’m dealing with this issue in a major way, but my computer shut off and I lost it.

    :(

I’ll try to update later. Meanwhile, I’ll hit the snooze button on my biological clock. Hopefully it will wake me up when it’s really time to get up.

I go back and forth between not wanting kids for a myriad of reasons, and then wanting them immediately because the movie Idiocracy scared the living bejeezus out of me. IT IS MY SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO PASS THESE BRILLIANT GENES ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. TAKE OF YOUR PANTS NOW, COLLEGE BOY.

First, I love you, Lady Crush. Second, I decided about three years ago that I do not want children. I’m not particularly fond of children, although, in my older years, I have found total bliss in being an aunt. And right now, and for the very foreseeable future, being an aunt is just the right amount of kid time for me.

To address the question posed in the blog, I don’t think 30 is too late at all to start planning a family. I think it happens quite frequently these days, in fact. I think as long as you feel like you are healthy enough to be able to keep up with a screaming 3 year old, you are healthy enough to have kids.
